A medicane is a rare atmospheric phenomenon that occurs – rarely = not frequently – in the Mediterranean Sea basin. A medicane is a Tropical Storm formed over the Mediterranean Sea that occasionally may reach a category 1 Hurricane.

On September 19th, Greece was hit by Medicane Ianos, with maximum sustained winds between 50 – 55 mph.

Ianos brought heavy rain and intense winds to Greece, destroying some infrastructures. Although there were no reports of fatalities as a consequence of this Medicane, many houses and other types of buildings have been reported as largely impacted by this Medicane and have suffered severe damages.
